PlaySteps Play Therapy

I am a qualified Play Therapist, registered with the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT).  I work with children experiencing emotional difficulties, allowing them space to explore and overcome those difficulties at their own pace.  I work in a child-centred manner, putting the child and not the ‘problem’ at the centre of my work.  I am friendly and non-judgemental in my attitude.

Children may experience emotional difficulties due to a range of issues, including:

  • Bereavement
  • Separation and divorce
  • Trauma including abuse and neglect
  • Anxiety
  • Sensory processing difficulties
  • Bullying

If you feel your child is suffering from low self-esteem for any reason, play therapy may be able to help.  Children often find it difficult to express themselves in words; in fact play is a natural form of communication for children.  In play therapy, children are offered a range of resources including drawing materials, small-world figures, sand, playdoh, and Lego.  Using these resources alleviates the need for talking, and allows the child to ‘play out’ their difficulties in a way and at a pace they are comfortable with.  The therapist follows the child’s lead, reflecting feelings and helping the child to make sense of what they choose to play.  Play therapy is best suited to the primary school age group, and techniques can be adapted for adolescents.

I have 13 years’ experience working with children in a therapeutic manner in hospitals and schools, helping them overcome anxieties related to hospital admission and medical procedures, as well as such things as difficulties with anger management, issues around foster care placements, autism, and divorce.

Play therapy sessions are charged at £50 for each 45 minute session.  Costs may be negotiable depending on individual circumstances.
